The Edinburgh University Russian Society (Edinburgh Russoc) dates back as far as 1914 when a famous physician, mathematician and a Nobel laureate Igor Yevgenyevich Tamm from the Russian Empire spent a year at Edinburgh University studying for his future works. Almost a hundred years onwards the society continues to promote the Russian culture within the university and the local community.
Today, the Society numbers over 100 members from Russia and the Post-Soviet States, but also from Britain, America etc. Most of our members are undergraduates at Edinburgh University, however the Society is open to anyone who is willing to join. We welcome non-Russian speakers and most of our events are either in English or multi-lingual.
The Edinburgh University Russian Society arranges frequent cultural events and talks by world famous figures. Our past speakers include politicians, journalists, diplomats, writers and many others. The Society is not affiliated with politics that allows for political events of great diversity.
